We had the pleasure of training Peer Educators on how to be responsible adolescents, make a positive impact on their peers, and contribute to society at large. This program, which was supported by the Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria, and the Ogun State Ministry of Health, aimed to equip young people with essential life skills and knowledge.
During the training, adolescents were educated on the importance of building self-esteem and making informed decisions. The sessions focused on personal hygiene, emphasizing its significance for overall health and well-being. Participants were also introduced to the concepts of goal setting and decision making, crucial skills for navigating adolescence and young adulthood.
Building self-esteem was a key component of the training. Adolescents learned strategies to develop a positive self-image and confidence, which are vital for their personal growth and social interactions. They were encouraged to recognize their strengths and achievements, fostering a sense of self-worth and resilience.
Decision making was another critical area covered during the program. The Peer Educators were taught how to make informed choices that would positively influence their lives and those of their peers. They explored various decision-making models and practiced evaluating the potential consequences of their actions.
Personal hygiene was highlighted as an essential aspect of adolescent health. The training provided practical tips on maintaining cleanliness and preventing common health issues. Adolescents were informed about the importance of regular handwashing, dental care, and overall body hygiene.
The program also delved into goal setting, teaching adolescents how to set realistic and achievable goals. They learned to identify their aspirations, create action plans, and stay motivated to reach their objectives. This skill is particularly important for young people as it helps them to stay focused and driven in their academic and personal lives.
Overall, the training aimed to empower Peer Educators with the knowledge and skills needed to lead by example and support their peers. By fostering responsible behaviour, enhancing self-esteem, and promoting good decision-making practices, the program sought to create a ripple effect of positive change within the adolescent community and beyond. The collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria, and the Ogun State Ministry of Health ensured that the training was comprehensive and aligned with national health priorities, contributing to the broader goal of improving adolescent health and well-being.
